Germany WWII 45th Division sabotaged ammo
|
"Come and get this ammunition. It's sabotaged. Bring us another load and check it before you bring it up."
"In Germany we got a load of sabotaged ammunition. Our gun was firing - just giving troop clearance. I was section Sargent at the time and I was down on the ground and give the order to fire and as soon as I heard it go off I knew something was wrong. The shell come out just a floppin'.
"In fact, C Company had a machine gun nest set out on the point of the hill and this shell went off about,
oh it couldn't have been over a 100 feet down below them. We checked the ammunition to see if there was anything wrong. We pulled out the round that we was going to fire next and pulled out the number 4, 3 and 2 charges. They had split number 4. You know, it was gettin' it out of the barrel and that was about all. I don't remember how many rounds we had - probably 25 or 30 at least. We looked at all of them and they had all been tampered with. Called up the supply Sargent and told him, ‘Come and get this ammunition. It's sabotaged. Bring us another load and check it before you bring it up.’"
