a tower on the Seine River...
"The river made a horse-shoe bend and they had this tower there with windows up at the top and the Germans was using it for an OP and I think they had a machine gun nest up there. Our lieutenant would say, ‘Just touch the elevation...just a little to the right...OK, now down just a hair.’
"He went on that way for awhile and I said , ‘What in the world are you trying to do?’
"He said, ‘I'm trying to put a shell in that window.’
"We never did get one in. They called in the big artillery -240mm - and got them up where they could fire point blank at the base of it. They shot the base and collapsed the whole works. They put a delay action on the fuse and it went through the wall and exploded inside."
